The Science of HBOT
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the application of 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized environment known as a hyperbaric chamber. HBOT boosts the body’s natural healing abilities by delivering medical-grade oxygen directly into a patient’s bloodstream, which increases the body’s overall oxygen levels. Decades of research and practice have found this therapy to be an effective, low-risk treatment that helps patients heal from a variety of medical conditions and procedures.
Common Mechanisms That Occur During HBOT
HBOT can be administered for between one and 50 sessions, depending on the condition being treated. More severe or acute injuries require a higher number of sessions. Each session typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
During each session, several chemical mechanisms occur that induce healing, including:
– Reduction of inflammation: HBOT interrupts the inflammatory response within tissues and organs (including the pancreas) by increasing anti-inflammatory cells and molecules like interleukin-10 and cytokines.
– Creation of new stem cells: HBOT increases the production of stem cells, which are vital for regenerating and repairing damaged cells in inflamed and immuno-compromised areas. After 20 HBOT sessions, the average person’s stem cell count is eight times higher than it was before treatment.
– Stimulates collagen production: HBOT increases the growth factors needed for collagen production. These growth factors include basic fibroblast growth factor, epidermal growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor.
– Increase of angiogenesis: Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1a) and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) are stimulated through proper HBOT protocols. These proteins contribute to the growth of new blood vessels over time.
– Increase of osteogenesis: HBOT increases alkaline phosphatase activity and expression of type I collagen and Runx-2mRNA. Patients who undergo daily treatment will experience an increased and accelerated rate of osteoblast differentiation, leading to an increase in bone formation.
– Reduction of hypoxia: As oxygen travels and dissolves further into tissues, the body adjusts to higher oxygen levels. Increased oxygen improves blood flow and reverses tissue hypoxia.
– Increase of nitric oxide production: Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in normal tissue repair. HBOT helps with NO synthesis to contribute to angiogenesis, collagen deposition, epidermal migration, and vascular bed repair.
– Reduction of tissue ischemia: Proper HBOT protocols encourage vasodilation, allowing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to flow through and restore damaged and/or radiated areas.
– Lowered probability of reinfection: HBOT helps the body produce immune-fighting cells like white blood cells, B-cells, and T-cells, making HBOT a natural antibiotic.
Each of these mechanisms plays a vital role in healing, depending on the medical condition presented in your patient. Visit our Science of Hyperbarics page for more on how each of the body’s systems is affected by HBOT.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Responses in DNA and at the Cellular Level
Your patients will experience regeneration from the inside out, starting at the cellular level. The cellular level of healing impacts DNA repair, growth factor release, and healing responses. Some of the healing responses HBOT assists with are:
– VEGF
– BDNF
– PDGF
– Improves mitochondrial performance
The efficacy of treatment on a cellular level promotes holistic healing for your patient.
FDA Approved Conditions for HBOT
The FDA has approved the following medical conditions for HBOT treatment. Each condition has a specific treatment protocol, and we will work closely with you to ensure your patient receives treatment at the right frequency. Insurance may cover the cost of treatment for these conditions.
Visit each page below to learn about the benefits of HBOT for the following FDA-approved conditions:
Diabetic foot ulcers
Osteomyelitis
Necrotizing soft tissue infection
Thermal burns
Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss
Exceptional blood loss/Anemia
Air or gas embolisms
Gas gangrene
Decompression sickness
Carbon monoxide poisoning
Acute traumatic ischemia
Compromised skin grafts and flaps

Other Research-Supported Medical Conditions that Benefit from HBOT
The FDA has yet to approve the following medical conditions for HBOT treatment, which means that most insurance providers do not cover treatment for these conditions. However, past and current research has shown HBOT to be an effective healing treatment for these conditions.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Fibromyalgia
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Arthritis
Filler occlusion/complications

Your Next Steps
Patient selection for HBOT is dependent on the patient’s official diagnosis and the severity of their medical condition(s). Visit this page for a list of the major medical conditions currently known to be effectively treated with HBOT.
FDA approved conditions are covered by most insurance providers, which can alleviate your patients’ financial burden. HBOT has been proven to be just as effective for many conditions not yet approved by the FDA.
If you have patients that you believe would be a good candidate for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we are happy to work with you moving forward.
